Liverpool Hope Composition Masterclass
Every year we send a quartet from The Sixteen to work with second and third year composition students from Liverpool Hope University. Led by Professor John Milsom, students are introduced to the music and compositional techniques of our Choral Pilgrimage composers.
In conjunction with Professor Milsom’s lectures and live performances, students create vocal quartets inspired by the techniques of said composers, supervised by Liverpool Hope composition staff Louis Johnson, Ian Percy and Stephen Pratt. In addition, they are able to contact Professor Milsom by Skype to discuss their progress.
The completed works are then performed and recorded by the quartet at a day-long event at the Creative Campus. Each singer gives feedback on how the pieces work vocally and offers advice on what could be improved when writing specifically for the voice.
We have collaborated with several organisations to provide support and experience for young composers at the start of their career, including the Royal Northern College of Music, The Bridgewater Hall, Tower Hamlets Music and Education Service and the Cheltenham Festival Composers Academy.
