Handel’s pastoral opera is a tale of tragedy, eternal love and liberation, telling the story of the mortal Acis, the goddess Galatea and their love doomed by the cyclops Polyphemus. It was the first full-scale work that Handel set to an English language text and he would only have had a small number of singers and musicians at his disposal.
Harry Christophers will stay true to the opera’s premiere performance in 1718, using a small group of singers and instrumentalists.
