This dynamic programme for choir and three instrumentalists of Italian and Portuguese Baroque music is at times reflective, at times uplifting and always inspired. Rebelo’s sumptuous setting of Panis Angelicus is almost opulent while Melgas’ Lamentations are prayerful and imbued with a sense of hope. There is no doubt, however, that the tour de force is Scarlatti’s virtuosic setting of the Stabat Mater.
