The volume and variety of Purcell’s output is incredible. Hear my prayer and Let mine eyes run down with tears are two great anthems of English church music, displaying Purcell’s rich harmonic and melodic language at its most original. However, the tour de force of the programme is Scarlatti’s setting of the Stabat mater – a work that perfectly showcases the virtuosity of The Sixteen.
