What has been your most memorable performance so far?

My most memorable performance is probably my most recent one, which was a solo recital of English song that I gave in Oxford this term. I think this was always bound to be an emotional performance as it was my last solo recital as an undergraduate in Oxford, and it was in the beautiful chapel of my college, Queen’s, where I have spent so much of my time singing over the past four years. But on top of this, I really enjoyed putting the programme together, including some of my all-time favourite songs, some new discoveries, as well as two pieces for the cello and one for string quintet. It was lovely to be able to collaborate with the other musicians both as a singer and a cellist, as well as performing to friends and loved ones that have supported me through my time as a student. I think that the looming and very daunting prospect of finals also put things into perspective for me; the fact I was giving the recital just a week before my first paper made it far easier to let go of the idea that it had to be perfect and allowed me to just focus on telling the story of some really beautiful English art-songs.

What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?

I think I’m most looking forward to learning from some inspirational musicians, not only Harry and Eamonn, but also the other singers on the course. Having spent so much time blitzing through music in the hour before it is due to be performed in a church service, I am also really looking forwards to the opportunity to work on some music in greater detail and explore how my voice fits into a different choral context.

Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Does cello count…? When I’m not singing or playing the cello, I enjoy reading anything from non-fiction to trashy teen novels, the latter of which really helped keep me going through finals! I’m also a keen tennis player, having played since a very young age, and as a ball-girl for my family before I learned how to hold a racket..! I adore wild water swimming, particularly in the sea, but the rivers in Oxford have also proven themselves to be particularly beautiful spots, especially in the spring. Most of all, however, I love “organised fun” with friends. I will always be the one insisting that we play ’the famous people game’ or racing demon!
