When and where was your first experience of music / singing?
My first experience of singing I suppose would have been in my primary school choir. Then when I was 8 years old, the Director of Music at Birmingham Cathedral came into my school and auditioned me for the cathedral choir, and I was lucky enough to get in! I remember going to a service at the cathedral after my audition and thinking I couldn’t wait to get started – and I haven’t stopped doing it since!
Where did you grow up? Did you have access to classical music?
I grew up in Birmingham, and I was fortunate enough to have access to a wide range of instrumental lessons. I had piano lessons throughout my time at school, and alongside the commitment of being a chorister, this means music has always been very much a part of my life.
What has been your most memorable performance so far?
A few spring to mind, particularly certain milestones in my career, but probably my most memorable performance was when I sang the Easter Day broadcasts with Canterbury Cathedral earlier this year. If you had told me just a few years ago that I would be singing with Canterbury Cathedral so soon, I wouldn’t have believed it – and Easter day was so special and had such great music, that it really made me appreciate how lucky I am to have this job!
What would your dream performance be?
Often I go through phases of loving different pieces of music, so it’s difficult to pin down what a dream performance would look like. I think singing a concert with a mix of my favourite pieces of music, with a group of friends in some great acoustic would be enough to make a dream performance for sure.
What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?
The social aspect of singing is one of the best parts of being in a choir in my opinion, so as much as I’m looking forward to making some great music, I’m also looking forward to meeting new people that are as passionate about choral singing as I am.
Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I love watching crime dramas or any comedies, often bingeing random series. I’m also an avid podcast enjoyer while I’m out walking or at the gym. Aside from that, I often enjoy simply hanging out with friends at the pub and playing board games/online games.
Are you still in education? Are you in any other young artists schemes?
I am no longer in full-time education, having studied music at Durham University. I am currently a Lay Clerk at Canterbury Cathedral and continue to develop my singing through vocal lessons with Christopher Turner and Linda Hurst.
