What is the best thing about singing with The Sixteen?
Every year visiting the UK’s finest pubs (sorry, I mean cathedrals.….) on the Choral Pilgrimage.
What is your favourite Sixteen anecdote or memory?
Well it’s not my finest moment, but this memory always surfaces when with my Genesis Sixteen friends. After a rollercoaster 2am finish witnessing England crash out of the World Cup semi-final in extra-time to Croatia, the following day we had a 9am rehearsal with Harry. We started with
with the infamous MacMillan Miserere and to my horror, during the first run-through, Harry signalled to me to sing the tenor solo. Crucially, at this point of the rehearsal I hadn’t been able to produce a sound above a Middle C, so you can imagine the spike in my heart-rate and the giggles coming from the rest of the section. Somehow I’ve survived (just), but more importantly England don’t have any silverware to show for it!
Is there a piece you have fallen in love with since performing it with The Sixteen?
How are the mighty fallen by Robert Ramsey. The first time I heard The Sixteen live they sang a set of Ramsey motets, and to my joy, I recently performed those exact pieces for Scotland Unwrapped at Kings Place in my first official concert as a Sixteen regular.
If you could go back in time and be present at any historical performance, what would it be?
For the Early Music nerd in me, it would have to be Rome, mid 1500’s, where undoubtedly the music of Palestrina would have been heard throughout the city. I can only imagine the reactions when hearing Missa Papae Marcelli sung for the first time.
What has been the most challenging piece of music you have ever performed?
Friede auf Erden by Schoenberg from memory……never again!
Does anyone in The Sixteen have any unusual habits?! If so, what are they?
I couldn’t possibly disclose this kind of information!
What do you do to relax in your spare time?
I’m obsessed with running so I’ll either be attempting a PB or scrolling through Strava, the best kind of social media.
Was there anyone who inspired you to become a singer? Is there anyone who continues to inspire you today?
Fellow freelance singer Cathy Bell taught me whilst I was at school and was my first inspiration to pursue a career in singing. My continued inspiration without a doubt are my extremely non-musical parents, someone has to fly the flag in the family….
What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t a musician?
Flying a plane or driving a train.
What would your ultimate desert island disc be?
Any American Country Music. From James Taylor to Zac Brown Band and Home Free, who doesn’t love a bit of cheesy a capella!
What would you eat for your last supper?
Full English Breakfast
