When and where was your first experience of music / singing?
From a very young age I have always been interested in music. I used to write my own songs where I would sing and play piano, sometimes roping my mum in, probably against her will, to sing the songs with me so I could harmonise on top. I was lucky to have teachers at school who noticed I had a musical ear and suggested I took up piano and violin lessons.
Where did you grow up? Did you have access to classical music?
I grew up in Southend-on-Sea in Essex where I joined the local Southend Girls Choir when I was 12 which was where I first discovered my love for choral singing. Being able to be a part of a bigger sound with all my best friends was the highlight of my week, and it inspired me to go on to join the National Youth Choir when I was 16 where I stayed for the next six years and is where I learnt the majority of my choral expertise.
What has been your most memorable performance so far?
Performing at the BBC Proms is always a highlight for me – there’s something about performing in the Royal Albert Hall that never gets old!
I recently performed in the spring opera at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where I had my first principal role as ‘Il Gatto’ in Respighi’s La Bella Dormente Nel Bosco. It was an incredible experience to work under the musical direction of Carlo Rizzi, and crawling around the stage dressed as a cat was not something I had envisioned myself doing before, but is something I would absolutely love to do more often.
What would your dream performance be?
My dream performance would definitely have to be performing in Eurovision, not that there’s much demand for classical singers on there, but I’d do anything to be on it. I have even considered moving to San Marino as the population is small enough that I might stand a chance there!
What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?
I am looking forward to making friends with other equally as passionate musicians who I can geek out with! Being able to explore lots of repertoire and make music with the cohort is a really exciting prospect, I can’t wait to get started. I also can’t wait to meet Harry and Eamonn and soak up all their precious knowledge and expertise.
Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I took up ice skating lessons last year and have really enjoyed working my way through the levels. I also love to paint and to cook and would love to take classes in these hobbies too when I find the time!
Are you still in education? Are you in any other young artists schemes?
As of July 2024 I will have graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where I have been studying as an undergraduate in Vocal Studies. In this upcoming year I will be a part of ‘Vox Next Gen’, a young artist training and mentoring initiative that is part of the vocal group ‘Vox Urbane’ based in London.
