When and where was your first experience of music / singing?
My first experience of singing was in the children’s choir at my church and at primary school, where I sang my first Once in Royal David’s City solo aged eight. As a music scholar at my secondary school, I was able to start singing lessons.
Where did you grow up? Did you have access to classical music?
I grew up in South London. I had access to classical music through my local music hub where I had music lessons every Saturday and gained a 4-year violin scholarship with the London Music Fund.
What has been your most memorable performance so far?
I would say my most memorable performance so far has to be when I first sang Flora in Garsington Opera’s production of Britten’s the Turn of the Screw. It was the first time I’d ever sung/performed in a professional production as a soloist, and I got to meet and work with the most inspiring and amazing musicians. It was also the first time I’d properly been exposed to Britten’s music – I’m still a hardcore fan today!
I also very recently did a performance of Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony with Junior Trinity Symphony Orchestra which was electrifying.
What would your dream performance be?
I’m obsessed with John Ireland’s Piano Concerto at the moment. I’d love to perform it with full orchestra.
What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?
I’m really looking forward to discovering and singing new choral repertoire and meeting everyone on the course.
Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
Outside of singing, my spare time is taken up with playing the piano, composing and playing the violin in orchestras. Apart from that, I really enjoy Animal Crossing on Nintendo.
Are you still in education?
I’m just about to start my A-Level exams – wish me luck! Happily, they’ll all be finished before the first course begins.
