Where did you grow up? Did you have access to classical music?
I grew up in and around London, surrounded by lots of music with my family all being musical (look out for the same surname further down in the tenor section!). I was fortunate to experience lots of musical opportunities growing up, like seeing concerts and musicals in various London venues. Funnily enough, a lot of my early experience with choral music came from sitting in organ lofts on Sunday mornings, listening to my mum singing in the service beneath and, more importantly, enjoying my colouring book.
What has been your most memorable performance so far?
It’s got to be my most recent, and sadly, final concert with The 24 in York. After many, many rehearsals, we performed Bach’s B Minor Mass (almost all!) off copy in Manchester and York. It was such a challenging but rewarding project, and the first time I’d ever learnt and performed such a big piece off book. It was a great final concert with a fantastic choir, which I will miss a lot.
What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?
I am really looking forward to singing with my peers and learning new and exciting repertoire. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from The Sixteen mentors and perform in some new places!
Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
Always a tricky question, as music tends to dictate most of my weekly schedule, but I enjoy running in my spare time, mostly around the river in York. Leading up to the Bach B minor mass performance, I went on a run listening to the mass in hopes of memorising it that way. I forgot how long it was and ended up running a half marathon!
Are you still in education? Are you in any other young artists schemes?
I have just finished a BA in Music at the University of York and am excited to start a new chapter at Cambridge University in September [2025], doing a PGCE at Homerton College. Alongside Genesis Sixteen, I am also part of the Constellation Choir Academy for 2025/2026.
