When and where was your first experience of music / singing?
I think I’ve always been surrounded by music, both at home, school and, now, at uni. My first experience of music was (apparently) singing along to the radio, and helping my dad play one note on the organ for a Christmas service.
Where did you grow up? Did you have access to classical music?
I grew up in Berkshire in a very ‘musical’ family; my dad being a music teacher and organist at my school. I’ve been fortunate enough to have access to classical music for my entire life, especially through joining the National Youth Choirs when I was about 11 and trying my hardest to get through my French horn grades at school.
What has been your most memorable performance so far?
At the end of 2023, I performed in my first opera, Benjamin Britten’s Curlew River, as the ‘Madwoman’ in a university production. While a chaotic journey getting my head around Britten’s score, I soon found out I would have to sing the part with a large wooden mask on for the entire performance, which as you can imagine, was a new challenge. Thankfully, I didn’t fall over.
What would your dream performance be?
I’m a big fan of English 20th century music, especially Tippett, and would love to sing in his opera The Midsummer Marriage. Otherwise, evangelising for Bach’s St John Passion in Leipzig would be pretty special.
What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?
Singing with lots of passionate people, and really getting to know more of the choral tradition. I’m really excited to spend time learning from The Sixteen and this year’s cohort, delving further into performing and creating great choral music.
Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m a big fan of theatre, and over the past couple of years have written a few plays. While I try my hardest for no one to get anywhere near them, I was very fortunate to have one of them staged in Cambridge last year and took another to the Edinburgh Fringe with my own theatre company in 2021.
Are you still in education? Are you in any other young artists schemes?
I’m currently studying music at Robinson College, Cambridge, and singing with the choir of Gonville and Caius College. While at university, I have thoroughly enjoyed singing on the Sir Arthur Bliss Lieder Scheme for the 2023/24 academic year, receiving invaluable coaching from Joseph Middleton and masterclasses from Sir Thomas Allen and James Gilchrist.
Outside of performances with Genesis Sixteen, have you got any concerts coming up?
At the time of writing, I’ve just finished my end of year recitals, but have a few performances coming up with my college choir and early music ensemble Lady Clare’s Consort, heading to Yorkshire and Newcastle on tour!
