When and where was your first experience of music / singing?
I played the saxophone for a few years as a kid but didn’t catch the bug then. I only got back into music towards the end of secondary school where I auditioned for the school musical and then joined my school choir and Dublin Youth Choir where I found my love for choral singing.
Where did you grow up? Did you have access to classical music?
I grew up in Dublin, Ireland not in a very musical household, all my siblings played instruments for a year or two but it never really stuck for most of us. However, I would have always heard classical music and Irish traditional music in my grandparents house when I visited. My grandparents both love opera and would play recordings of their favourite overtures and arias for me. Though I wasn’t playing it or listening to it in my own time, I was always captivated by the music they showed me!
What has been your most memorable performance so far?
In 2023, I sang Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in the National Concert Hall Dublin for a concert commemorating Ireland’s 50 year membership in the European Union. The choir balcony was overflowing with singers and we had the full force of the National Symphony Orchestra with us. The sound was incredible and I’ll never forget the feeling of singing that amazing piece of music with such a big group!
What would your dream performance be?
There is so much music I would love to perform: Tallis’ Spem in Alium, Handel’s Dixit Dominus, Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, and Shaw’s Partita for 8 Singers to name a few, but the list goes on for ages. There’s too much good music to choose one piece!
What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?
I’m really looking forward to meeting young singers at a similar stage to me and learning from them, as well as Harry, Eamonn, and the rest of the Genesis team. The singers I know from previous cohorts have told me great things about the incredible learning environment of the courses which I am really excited to be a part of!
Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
When I am not singing or working on my other instrumental skills I really enjoy running and hiking. I love being outside, especially if it’s in the mountains.
Are you still in education? Are you in any other young artists schemes?
I just finished my first year studying Music Education in Trinity College Dublin and the Royal Irish Academy of Music where I study voice with Owen Gilhooly-Miles. Last year I sang with Chamber Choir Ireland Studio, their development programme for emerging singers.
