When and where was your first experience of music / singing?

My first real memory of singing was at primary school, when I was about eight. The Director of Music at Birmingham Cathedral came in to audition us youngsters for the choir. I went in full of confidence and then proceeded to absolutely butcher “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. He’d clearly had enough of me by the end and sent me out and I left the room convinced I hadn’t made the cut. As I left, I remember insisting “I promise I can sing much better than that”. Thankfully things have gone uphill since then.

Where did you grow up? Did you have access to classical music?

I was born and raised right in the centre of Birmingham. I’m really the first musician in my family, though my Mum and Dad both work in museums and heritage, so culture was always in the air at home. I was lucky enough to grow up in a city with brilliant access to the arts—choirs like Ex Cathedra, the CBSO etc.—and being taken to concerts from quite a young age definitely helped spark my love for music.

What has been your most memorable performance so far?

Probably by some distance, the one I will never forget was singing the role of Pilate with Oxford Bach Soloists this Easter. The chorus was three-to-a-part and the orchestra one-to-a-part, so it was thrilling and probably the most biggest solo sing I have done to date — but it gave me such an appetite to do more!

What would your dream performance be?

My dream performance would have to be in a concert hall I could completely obsess over, so it would have to be somewhere genuinely spectacular. The Elbphilharmonie is right up there for me as one of my favourite buildings in the world, although Hamburg can be a wee bit foggy at times, so I might just pick Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana instead: absolutely stunning, beautifully intimate, the perfect place to sing some one-to-a-part Bach motets with a lovely ensemble of friends. Followed by sangria and tapas afterwards, of course. Very hard to argue with that.

What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?

I know the singing opportunities and opportunities to learn will be fantastic, but above all I am really looking forward to meeting lovely new people and making new friends. That is genuinely one of the best things about singing for me: you end up meeting so many interesting, funny people. So I am excited for new horizons, and hopefully new friendships too.

Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Outside of singing, I’d probably say I’m quite well known for doing lots of composing. It has been my main musical thing since I started writing around the age of 11, and I recently recorded my first album as a composer, “Moonrise”, with Somerville College Choir, Oxford, which came out in May 2026. Composing is definitely my favourite musical thing to do, and it’s become a real form of relaxation and therapy for me.

That said, I do promise I have hobbies outside music too. In my spare time I try to keep fit by going to the gym and running, and I am also a huge foodie and I love cooking. Indian food is probably my favourite thing to make, though I am always trying out new recipes. I speak German and love travelling, so I try to get over to the German-speaking world whenever I can to keep the cogs of my increasingly rusty language skills turning. And I also love going to concerts and gigs with friends whenever I get the chance. I saw CMAT live in Manchester earlier this year, which was one of the best nights of my life.

Are you still in education? Are you in any other young artists schemes?

I am just finishing up my final year studying music as an undergraduate at Oxford, alongside completing my year as a Choral Scholar with Oxford Bach Soloists. I do not have anything else lined up just yet, so I am genuinely delighted to be part of Genesis this year. It’s such a dream come true to be part of such an excellent programme, and I feel very lucky to be involved.

Outside of performances with Genesis Sixteen, have you got any concerts coming up?

A few weeks before my first Genesis course in August, I’ll be going on tour with my college choir from Oxford to China for nearly three weeks, which I am very excited about. Beyond that, I do not have any other choral singing planned for next year apart from Genesis, so I am looking forward to seeing what opportunities come up and having plenty of time to devote my full attention to the programme.
