James Kitchingman

Tenor

James Kitchingman

Tenor

When and where was your first experience of music / singing?

My first extended experience of singing was at Ripon Cathedral, where I was a chorister from age 7. I’m told that I sung masterpieces such as ‘daisy daisy’ at home much earlier though!

Where did you grow up? Did you have access to classical music?

I’m from Ripon, North Yorkshire. I went to the Cathedral Choir School from reception up so had lots of exposure to classical music through performance, tuition and eventually in the choir itself.

What has been your most memorable performance so far?

I’ve performed all over the world with the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge over the past few years. Standout concerts include Durham Cathedral (NC, USA), Utrecht Domkerk (Netherlands) and Sinfonia Smith Square (London, thrice!).

What would your dream performance be?

I would love to perform at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam one day, perhaps with The Sixteen or the BBC Singers, if I’m lucky. Dream Venue!

What are you looking forward to with Genesis Sixteen?

I’m really looking forward to meeting the other members of my cohort, and also learning from some incredibly inspiring professionals over the course of the year. I hope that I’ll become a more well-rounded musician by next summer thanks to Genesis Sixteen.

6. Outside of singing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m a keen footballer, playing for my college and captaining the college choir team. Yes, that’s a thing. I’m also really into cars, a love that is totally unrequited in bike-centric Cambridge. Musically speaking, I enjoy accompanying people at the piano as well as all the singing I do.

Are you still in education?

At the time of writing in June 2025, I’m in the final month of my music undergraduate course at Cambridge. I’m going on to study with Robert Hollingworth on the ‘Solo Voice Ensemble Singing’ MA course in York for [2025-26], which I’m very excited about!

Outside of performances with Genesis Sixteen, have you got any concerts coming up?

Clare Choir are touring to Rome and Madrid in early July 2025, presenting several concerts in each city, including at Santa Maria Maggiore in the former. My Renaissance-focussed vocal ensemble Lady Clare’s Consort is also touring this summer, to Wales, Shropshire and North Yorkshire. Not quite as far flung but just as thrilling!
