Stefanie Heichelheim

Viola

From gardening to singing and dancing, meet The Sixteen violist Stefanie

What & where was your debut gig with The Sixteen?
The Sixteen’s first Messiah; St John’s Smith Square, in 1986.

What’s been a memorable Sixteen gig & why?
Touring around Spain in 1996, playing the St. Matthew Passion when the Dunblane massacre took place (if my memory serves me right).

What’s your favourite Sixteen recording?
Can’t choose, I like too many.

Where did you train/study?
Royal Academy of Music

What are your hobbies and interests?
Gardening, dancing and singing!

What else do you do (professionally) when not playing with The Sixteen?
I am a regular member of the Gabrieli Consort and the English Concert and also work for most of the period instrument orchestras in the UK. I’m a member of the Arbutus String Quartet. I also play modern viola and teach violin and viola.

What football team do you support?
I know it’s criminal as a member of the Sixteen – but I don’t!

Please tell us a little about your instrument.
Baroque Viola: copy of Andreas Guaneri model of 1676, made by Roland H. Ross in 2004

Classical Viola: English Viola made in 1800, attributed to George Craske.
